Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival)

The 5th day of the 5th lunar month (usually in June).

Dragon boats symbolize strength and unity
Zongzi represents offerings to Qu Yuan’s spirit
Realgar wine and herbs symbolize protection from harm.

History

The Dragon Boat Festival honors Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet who drowned himself in the Miluo River after his homeland was conquered. Locals raced boats to save him and threw rice into the river to distract fish from his body, which led to the tradition of dragon boat races and eating zongzi.
