History
Mencius was a disciple of Confucius’ grandson and became one of the most prominent interpreters of Confucian thought. He traveled widely, advising rulers on governance and the moral obligations of leadership. His work, The Mencius, presents his dialogues with kings and his elaborations on Confucian ideas.
Contribution
Mencius emphasized the innate goodness of human nature, arguing that people are born virtuous but can be corrupted by their environment. His belief in benevolent leadership influenced Chinese political thought and social ethics. He also promoted the idea of "righteous rebellion" against tyrannical rulers.
